Modeling non-linear dielectric susceptibilities of supercooled molecular liquids

چکیده

Advances in high-precision dielectric spectroscopy have enabled access to non-linear susceptibilities of polar molecular liquids. The observed non-monotonic behavior has been claimed provide strong support for theories dynamic arrest based on the thermodynamic amorphous order. Here, we approach this question from perspective facilitation, an alternative view focusing emergent kinetic constraints underlying a liquid approaching its glass transition. We derive explicit expressions frequency-dependent higher-order exhibiting shape, height which increases as temperature is lowered. demonstrate excellent agreement with experimental data glycerol, challenging idea that response functions reveal correlated relaxation supercooled

Efficient measurement of linear susceptibilities in molecular simulations: application to aging supercooled liquids.

We propose a novel method to measure time-dependent linear susceptibilities in molecular simulations, which does not require the use of nonequilibrium simulations, subtraction techniques, or fluctuation-dissipation theorems. The main idea is an exact reformulation of linearly perturbed quantities in terms of observables accessible in a single unperturbed trajectory. We apply these ideas to supe...

Soft glassy rheology of supercooled molecular liquids.

We probe the mechanical response of two supercooled liquids, glycerol and ortho-terphenyl, by conducting rheological experiments at very weak stresses. We find a complex fluid behavior suggesting the gradual emergence of an extended, delicate solid-like network in both materials in the supercooled state-i.e., above the glass transition. This network stiffens as it ages, and very early in this p...

Light-scattering spectra of supercooled molecular liquids.

The light-scattering spectra of molecular liquids are derived within a generalized hydrodynamics. The wave-vector and scattering-angle dependencies are given in the most general case and the change of the spectral features from liquid to solidlike is discussed without phenomenological model assumptions for (general) dielectric systems without long-ranged order. Exact microscopic expressions are...

namics of supercooled liquids ?

Europhysics Letters PREPRINT Are there localized saddles behind the heterogeneous dynamics of supercooled liquids? Abstract. – We numerically study the interplay between heterogeneous dynamics and properties of negatively curved regions of the potential energy surface in a model glassy system. We find that the unstable modes of saddles and quasi-saddles undergo a localization transition close t...

Mechanics of Supercooled Liquids

Pure substances can often be cooled below their melting points and still remain in the liquid state. For some supercooled liquids, a further cooling slows down viscous flow greatly, but does not slow down self-diffusion as much. We formulate a continuum theory that regards viscous flow and self-diffusion as concurrent, but distinct, processes. We generalize Newton’s law of viscosity to relate s...
